SPORTFISHING

Labrador is home to a wide diversity of fish species and the population within each species is truly astounding. With countless pristine lakes and rivers, surrounded by the unspoiled natural beauty of Labrador, we can offer sportfishing fanatics the ultimate in wilderness river or lake fishing. Labrador is sparsely populated and host to an enormous amount of lake and river systems, many of which are still unexplored areas, and all teeming with trophy sized fish.

If your idea of a great vacation includes any of the following scenarios:
  1. Regularly tangling with Lake Trout weighing anywhere between 15 to 30 lbs., quite possibly more
  2. Doing battle with a nasty Northern Pike
  3. Angling in a territory that currently holds the World Record for Landlocked Salmon
  4. Having a shore lunch of freshly caught Brook Trout, surrounded by the natural allure of one the world’s last great sportfishing destinations
  5. Experiencing the thrill of landing a Record Size fish in a wilderness region that continually produces the Biggest and the Best
Then we could have the trip for you!!

Labrador Hunting Safari offers fully guided (1:2 fishers) all inclusive, fishing expeditions from late June to early August. During your expedition, a huge amount of territory is covered (more than 60 miles of water) and fishing is conducted from either boat or shore. We are a fully equipped, professional outfitter, with a varied inventory of boats, motors, freighter canoes, tentcamps and equipment etc. available. Our camps and lodges are well constructed, comfortable accommodations with full amenities and a full-time cook in most locations.

The species available are as follows:

OUANANICHE, more commonly known as LANDLOCKED SALMON, is genetically the same fish as the sea-run salmon and generally speaking, a brother to the “King” of this highly sought after gamefish. Labrador currently holds the world record for Ouananiche, that being a trophy catch of 21 lb., 11 oz.. taken from the Smallwood Reservoir, an expansive water system frequently explored by our experienced guides and clients. Seven and eight pound Ouananiche are common in some waters, however, ten to fifteen pound catches are not uncommon either. Congregated in a pool and eagerly searching the surface for a meal, these magnificent fish create an eruption of silver in the water when in pursuit of food. Like the sea-run salmon, this fish grows big, strikes hard & fights harder, often taking to the air in a show of acrobatic jumps. When fishing in Labrador, you never know what your next cast will bring in, as these waters are also inhabited by many other species of fish.

LAKE TROUT, or the infamous Laker as it is often referred to as, is a species of fish that is found in Labrador, but not on the Island of Newfoundland. They typically measure 15-20 inches in length, can weigh up to 40 lbs.& are found in both lakes and rivers. Physically, their body is covered with light colored spots on a background that can vary from light green to brownish black. Its flesh can be white, pink, orange, or orange-red, depending in part on its diet, which can vary from lake to lake. Early in the season, when surface temperatures are low, flies can be used, however, once the upper waters warm with the progression of seasons, they tend to seek cooler waters where trolling with spinners is more productive. Whether you catch it by fly or spinner, this is a delicious fish that has long been well regarded by avid anglers and outdoorsmen alike.

NORTHERN PIKE fishing is also available in the freshwater of Labrador’s lakes and rivers andis truly an angling adventure all on its own! The fierce fighting nature of this species requires a sturdily designed rod, five or six feet in length, with a 10 to 12 pound test line. This carnivorous fish can grow to between 20 & 30 lbs., has a voracious appetite for practically anything in its path, and can tolerate a wide range of water temperatures and conditions. Sometimes referred to as Water Wolves, they typically lurk under cover and can strike with amazing speed and great strength. Once on the hook, this sweet tasting, white fleshed behemoth, with dog-like teeth, will most certainly be guaranteed to give you one heck of a fight!!

BROOK TROUT fishing in Labrador offers some of the finest fly-fishing in the entire world! This is one of the last areas on the globe that contains pure, untouched wilderness areas of this magnitude. It is the land of giant brook trout, where anything weighing less than two pounds is not considered, by Labrador standards, to be noteworthy. This is a place where you can leave the five weight rod at home and experience the best fishing of your life. You would be under- equipped with anything less that a six weight rod, one that will easily cast a weight-forward seven floating line. The rivers are big, with strong healthy currents & the brookies can range between four and nine pounds.

WHITEFISH are another species that, like the Lake Trout, are abundant in the waters of Labrador, but not on the Island of Newfoundland. Two types of Whitefish can be caught in Labrador; the Lake Whitefish which can grow up to 18 inches in length and weigh in a range between two and seven pounds, and the Round Whitefish, which are usually between 8-12 inches in length. The Lake Whitefish has long been prized for its exceptionally fine flavor.

In order to preserve our precious resource & maintain the quality of our fishing, LABRADOR HUNTING SAFARI both supports and practices a Catch and Release policy which requires the use of barbless hooks. If desired, one trophy fish of each species may be retained for a trophy mount and we will make suitable preparations for travel. Please visit our Photo Gallery to view more fishing photos.
